  24. If you don't have one, get an account on GEnie . There you will find the
  25. program DJ_DEGAS.TTP which will print all Degas file types to the Deskjet.
  26. For resolution-independent printing that takes better advantage of the
  27. Deskjet's 300 dpi resolution, however, I strongly suggest getting a GDOS
  28. driver (such as Neocept's Turbojet). Then you can import those Degas pictures
  29. into Timeworks DTP or other GDOS programs, and get better results.

  34. You can pick up a Deskjet driver for Publishing Partner 1.03 from Softlogik's
  35. BBS (314) 894-0057.

  40. Howard Chu recently converted a lot of Macintosh fonts to GDOS format.
  41. You can FTP the set from archive sites, and probably find them on Genie as
  42. well. The Fontz program from Neocept comes with some good GDOS fonts,
  43. as does Wordup and also Timeworks DTP. With Fontz, you can make your
  44. own GDOS fonts, or modify existing ones.

  49. I just bought VIDI-ST. It captures and digitizes video images so fast
  50. you are actually watching your movie in real time on the ST monitor.
  51. It buffers up the video frames, so that when you freeze, you can choose
  52. among any of the snapshots it has saved. On my 2.5 Meg 1040 ST, up to
  53. 65 frames can be buffered. It is not a true color digitizer, it captures
  54. at 16 different shades, which you can then assign a color palette to.
  55. For true color, you can get Color ComputerEyes, but this one requires
  56. a still image from your video source. The image capture takes 24 seconds
  57. if you want a good quality image, and 6 seconds for the lower quality.
  58. Process the raw output file using Digispec, and you will get a Spectrum 512
  59. format file that renders your image in true color.

  113.         G'day folks.

  115.         Our club had a great year last year.  We put on some really good shows
  116. and we want to do it again.  As a member of the executive, I'll request a
  117. brain storming session soon.  In the meantime,  does anyone have any great idea
  118. they've seen and wouldn't mind sharing?  Or something they'd like to see in a
  119. users group?  I'd like to be able to give the guys something to chew on after
  120. this session, so if anyone can help I'd be grateful.

  122.         I haven't done a presentation yet, and since January we plan to slow
  123. down a little, organize, regroup and come back good, the prez asked me if I
  124. could take care of January.  I'd like to talk about upgrades: drives - hard and
  125. floppy, memory, accelerators, add-ons, etc etc.  I've done a drive upgrade
  126. myself, and soldered a memory upgrade, but I'd like to know what else is out
  127. there.  What brands, addresses, caveats, and things like that.  If people have
  128. docs and write-ups on anything related at all, I'd love to see it.  Docs I
  129. could put in the newsletter would be ideal, but I want to write most of that
  130. myself.

  132.         I'd love to hear from other clubs about what they have found successful
  133. and what flopped.  I know we had one really bad meeting.  We left it all to one
  134. guy who promised he could take care of everything.  People ended up standing
  135. around and chatting with each other instead of doing anything, so I'll be
  136. careful.  The idea was good - Casino Night.  Play card games with computers,
  137. and starting with $100, see how much you can make.  The winner got to take
  138. home some great prizes.

  154. I'm slowly getting up to speed on TeX (running on a VAX) and Metafont (on
  155. my Atari ST), together with various viewers.  Not a guru in sight, unfortunately
  156. And the manuals kinda assume the availability of one.  So I have a few questions
  157. 1) Once virmf has read plain.bas, is there any way of interrogating it on-line
  158. as to what the settings corresponding to various modes are?
  159. 2) Can anyone tell me the settings for the modes built into plain.bas for the
  160. Atari ST (as available on panarthea)?
  161. 3) The printing of WEB documents that incorporate changes seems to be MASSIVELY
  162. affected by a thing called '\maybe'.  I keep finding places where it's set,
  163. but noplace where it's either tested or conditionally set.  Any help?  Any
  164. pointers?
  165. 4) So I lied in the header..here's something else: I have neither a .DVI driver
  166. for my Star NX-1000 nor the connections to support ftp.  Any pointers to
  167. source or Atari ST executables of (I presume)dvieps?  Is some file I already
  168. have likely to be a good skeleton to build my own from?
  169. 5) (getting weird) My printer supports color.  Does the TeX universe?

  179. Does anyone know of a public domain resource construction set (RCS)?
  180. If so, could you mail it to me please.  C source code would be very
  181. nice to have as well, if available.  I need this for a project where
  182. I am trying to teach GEM programming to a bunch of beginning C
  183. programmers.  Mark Johnson C seems adequate for a compiler but we
  184. don't have an RCS that can be distributed to everyone.
